Open Virtual Augmented Reality

openVAR is an open source project creating an enabling tool to facilitate the creation of virtual experiential hands-on learning environments.

openVAR is licences under the MIT Open Source licence.

Getting Started

  • The openVAR project seeks to work with contributor across the globe to develop a framework and development kit to enable anyone to create and interact with virtual and augmented reality content for the purposes of education.
  • openVAR is democratizing the ability of ordinary people to create and own virtual experiences. The world of technology is heading towards immersive virtualization of content and experiences. The openVAR project is an attempt to bring everyone along to avoid another digital divide that may emerge as a result of this extraordinary technological global transformation happening on a large scale.
  • You start by Volunteering as a contributor to the development of openVAR by filling the Contributors Register to begin contributing to the code base, manage community activities, write documentation, maintain the website, moderate forums and/or engage in advocacy.
  • Contact the openVAR team by sending an email to openVAR@ecampus.camp

Roadmap

Phase One

Create a viewer that can be used to view both VR and AR content. The viewer can be installed on smartphones. The viewer has a backend where content can be uploaded and organized.

Phase Two

Create a framework to enable the production of content that can be viewed by the viewer. Enable the conversion of pictures, videos, and text (an entire website) into openVAR viewable content using the openVAR content production framework.

Phase Three

Create an open standard for the production of viewing gear hardware that can use the viewer directly without the need for a smartphone to be inserted into the gear.
